Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter

Scripture Readings

Tonight will be Easter Vigil. If you have the chance to go, I recommend attending. This Mass is a beautiful service filled with scripture, tradition, and new life of those receiving Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion for the first time. There are nine readings. Together, they tell the beautiful story of salvation history from creation to Jesus’ resurrection:

  1. The Story of Creation: Genesis 1:1—2:2
  2. The Testing of Abraham: Genesis 22:1-8
  3. Moses’ Victory Over the Egyptians: Exodus 14:15—15:1
  4. The New Zion: Isaiah 54:5-14
  5. An Invitation to Grace: Isaiah 55:1-11
  6. Importance of Wisdom: Baruch 3:9-15, 32—4:4
  7. Renewal of the People: Ezekiel 36:16-17a, 18-28
  8. Freedom from Sin; Life in God: Romans 6:3-11
  9. The Resurrection of Jesus: Luke 24:1-12

I won’t go into a reflection at length about each reading. However, I encourage you to read all of them. Each one tells of God’s covenant with God’s people. Covenants are a way God loves and is present in the lives of people. I invite you to reflect how each story relates to your life and how God’s covenant is present to you.
