Thursday of Holy Week
Today we begin the sacred Paschal Triduum with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. It is here that Jesus washes the disciples’ feet and tells them that He has given a “model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” How are we called to follow Jesus today in this world and this time?
When I place myself in the scene of the Last Supper, I imagine that the disciples sense that this gathering has great significance. They most likely recognize that Jesus may not be with them much longer, and they are not only afraid of that future, but they wonder how they are going to carry on after Jesus is gone. Jesus does something so profound and so unexpected when He takes a towel and basin of water and begins to wash their feet. Peter cannot accept Jesus’ act of service and humility, and refuses to be a part of this action. Jesus reminds Peter that he will “have no inheritance with me” unless he allows Jesus to perform this action. Jesus goes on to tell Peter that he will “understand later” what this means. Although Jesus is called “teacher and master” He instructs the disciples that they must be like Him and wash one another’s feet- this is the model to follow.
Tonight as part of our celebration at the family of parishes, we will be washing each other’s feet. We are imitating Jesus and His call to follow Him, but as I reflect on this action and Jesus words, I believe that there is a much deeper call to service. Jesus tells the disciples (and us) “as I have done for you, you should also do.” The washing of the feet implies a deep commitment to service. Not only is there a call to serve, but there is a deep focus on humility. No one is better than another- we are all a part of the human family no matter what color, religion, ethnicity, age, or gender. Jesus washed all of the disciples’ feet (including Judas) and we are also called to serve and care for all people. There are no exceptions- we love as Jesus loved- all people and all of the time.
Today, take time to reflect on this gospel passage and imagine Jesus washing your feet. How is Jesus calling you to follow Him? Who are the people that Jesus is calling you to serve? What are the ways that Jesus is calling you to love and include others in your caring compassion? Who are the people you are called to share mercy and hope? How can you humbly surrender your will to the will of God, so you can continue to build the Kingdom? As you meditate on Jesus and His service and love for you, pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, so you will have the grace to follow His example as a beloved disciple.
