Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop
Today’s readings challenge us to be the best member of the community (or family) we can be, by sharing the gifts we have been given, appreciating the gifts of others, and doing the work of being our best selves.
Paul’s letter to the Romans is as timely today in reminding us that we are each given different gifts and ways we can serve. He uses the word ‘exercise’ twice, implying the discipline of practice and repetition - giving hospitality and using our gifts for the good of others, even when we don’t feel like it, so that this service becomes a natural habit. It is worth praying each line as a personal examen - or reflection on how we are living each aspect in our own lives. Jesus reminds us to not become stagnant in our growth, nor inflated with self-importance and urges us to stay alert to His invitations. Jesus is with the humble and disadvantaged, loves the poor and lowly and calls us to be generous. This season of cooler weather and awareness of the needs of those around us as we approach the season of thanksgiving and sharing with others, is a good time to read Pope Leo’s recent apostolic exhortation - Dilexi te - On love for the poor, and reflect on how we are being called to respond to the needs of others. May we collectively be the Body of Christ, in how our lives express his Love. https://www.vatican.va/
