Scripture Readings

When facing the challenges of life, today’s gospel story reminds us of the importance of having a firm foundation.  As Christians, Jesus is our rock and foundation.  When we recognize our need for Christ in our lives, rely upon the gifts that He gives, spend time nurturing our relationship with Him, and follow Him in word and deed, we will deepen our foundation.  Our lives will not be without challenges or storms, but with our lives rooted in Christ we will recognize that we are not alone, since our support comes from God who is always near.

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells the story of what happens when someone follows the ways of the Lord.  This person is like an individual who digs deeply and places the foundation of the house on rock.  The torrents of the flood water are unable to shake the house since it is well built.

As I reflect on this story, why would anyone not want to have a strong foundation for their home?  Pondering this question brings me to several possible reasons.  Some people may not want to invest the time and energy needed for this extra investment.  There is a rush to complete a task in spite of the greater risk for future disasters.  Likewise, people may not always want to spend the time and energy needed to nurture their relationship with God.  To dig deeper requires time, effort and awareness of the need for God in our lives.

Some people may not build a strong foundation because they feel they lack the resources. St. Paul in today’s first reading reminds us God supplies all the mercy, love, and grace that we need. We need to recognize that God supplies what we need to live lives of love and compassion- we only need to ask.

Finally, some people may refuse to build strong foundations because of their pride.  They may believe that they do not need God or God’s ways to live full lives. They choose to do it the way that they choose, and what works best for them.

Digging deep foundations where we grow in our faith as Christian disciples can be done in many ways. Prayer is an excellent way where we rest in God’s presence and allow the Spirit to fill us. Scripture also provides a way for us to strengthen our understanding of God and God’s love.  The sacraments can be wonderful opportunities to receive God’s grace and blessing.  Finally, Christ’s presence in the people and world around us can help us to nurture our relationship, so we can grow in our ability to follow.

The ideal time to work on building our strong foundation is when our life is less turbulent. Some may neglect the focus on building at these times, since the need for help seems to be minimal.   By remaining centered on God and God’s ways during our good times, we develop the faith and courage to remain strong when the storms come into our lives.  God never promised that our lives would be without difficulties.  Jesus reminds us that God’s love is always present and available to help us during these challenges, and this Presence provides the necessary wisdom, courage and love to weather the storms.

Loving God, Jesus reminds us that You and your ways are the foundation for all life and goodness.  Help us to recognize our need for you, deepen our love for you, and live lives that reveal your love and mercy to the world around us. May Your Spirit provide us all that we need to build Your Kingdom.  We pray this in Christ’s name. AMEN.
