Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Scripture Readings

Today is a wonderful solemnity of celebrating the birth of Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, and the intertwining of their unique lives. Last month, we celebrated the story of the Visitation where John kicked in Mom Elizabeth’s womb in recognition of Jesus in Mary’s womb.  Today’s feast of John the Baptist is a public holiday in several places - I was blessed to experience the cultural festivities and religious roots firsthand as a graduate student in Montreal, Quebec Canada. Falling close to the July 21st summer solstice (the longest day of the year), it marks the start of summer in the northern hemisphere, which is so fitting since John heralds the light of Jesus.

Summer, with its gift of holidays, travels and a shift from the schedules of the school/programming year, is a time to slow down, pause in nature’s beauty and savor the goodness and wonder of how we are cared for by the Spirit of God in all Creation.  The readings share God’s intimate love and tender care, and invite us to open ourselves to be formed as vessels of God’s light and love for our world.  It’s worthwhile to take time to ponder the richness of the Scriptures in both the Vigil Mass and Mass during the day, and know that each of us, like John, are wonderfully made and chosen by God to bear Christ’s light to our world in our unique way and role.  Let the Scripture words sink in, letting them speak to us personally, and put all fears and hopes before God.

Some questions for reflection…

  • What parts of me are like the aged Elizabeth and Zechariah thinking God’s promised new life will not come ?

  • How might I take hope from John’s life in my journey through desert paths awaiting God’s revelation ?  (Like John and Jesus, it might take decades before we see a promise fulfilled in a future encounter).

  • How can I take more time to rest in God’s loving care ?

  • Join your praise with the psalmist - What wonders has God worked in me that I am grateful for?

  • Where and to whom might I be called to bring Christ’s light and care?

May our faith journeys be deeply blessed with new light, hope and insight in this wonderful summer season!  St. John the Baptist, herald and guide, pray for us.  Walk with us, encourage us and illuminate our path and encounters with Christ.
