Friday of the Seventh Week of Easter

Scripture Readings

Looking for something good to read? Are you in the mood for some action, suspense, and danger? All the while being… inspired? If so, I have a story for you! So, make a cup of tea, get comfy in your favorite chair, and curl up Acts chapters 21 through 26 (blanket and fur-baby optional).

Today’s reading in Acts is only a glimpse of the dramatic events occurring in Paul’s life. In the larger tale, the apostle is threatened, accused, imprisoned, and tossed from one Roman governor to the next, while an angry and self-righteous mob plots to ambush and murder him.

The truth is, no one knew what to do with Paul’s case. His accusers could not prove their charges against him. Nor could he be immediately punished, as the chief priests would have preferred, because of his Roman citizenship. So, the Roman officials had no choice but to grant Paul’s request to appeal to Caesar. They would send him to Rome.

Paul is not in charge here. The Romans allowed him few liberties as their prisoner. All he knew was to speak with courage. Paul did his part by being bold, perhaps knowing, hoping, and praying that his witness for Jesus would bring about new believers.

While waiting for freedom that may or may not come, amid persecution and threats, journeys and trials, and testimonials, Paul remained courageous.

Let us pray the Believer’s Prayer for that same courage!

Heavenly Father, enable us to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus (Acts 4:29-10).
