Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
My father died on Mardi Gras. Actually 25 years ago this year. But one of the most vivid memories I have of that time is the advice given to me the day before by an elder Marianist Brother that I was close to. We had been in communication about my worry about my Dad’s health and he said to me: “Wrap him in the Lenten Mystery.” My father went to heaven the next day, and I had no doubt about what I was “doing for Lent” that year.
I find that is often the case – that my life and its circumstances dictate how I should “give generously to the Most High” during Lent as the first reading tells us. The circumstances of my life and the world often give the best shape to my Lenten journey. The Gospel today promises that we will receive back “a hundred times and more” what we have given up for the Lord. I’m sticking with Pope Francis in suggesting that we not focus on giving up things like chocolate – but rather offer words of peace and encouragement like my elder Brother did. Are we welcoming of others? Are we making a way for the marginalized to having an easier path? Those are the things that we really need “a hundred fold” in our world right now. Blessings as we all begin this Lenten Journey!
