Tuesday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time
“Life is difficult” is the opening line of one of my favorite books, The Road Less Traveled by Scott Peck. Today’s readings similarly remind us to prepare ourselves for trials in our Christian service and stance for justice. Though I would like all moments to be happy and easy-going, I recognize that It takes diligent work and virtuous discipline to be a faithful worker, friend, partner, or family/community member. It takes courage to act justly and speak for the disadvantaged.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is aware of the rejection, suffering and death that he is going to face. The disciples resist understanding the message, and succumb to thoughts of power, ego and the greatness of worldly success. Jesus challenges them, inviting them to be one with the humble and lowly and to have the simple trust and honesty of a child,
The Sirach text offers helpful guidance for our growth in wisdom, which will require patience (mentioned more than once), waiting, sincerity of heart and steadfastness. We are invited to trust and hope in God and are promised that God will help us, direct us, enlighten our hearts and protect us. Let us take time to ponder the wonderful promises and caring love in the words of the first reading and psalm. We will re-discover our God who is compassionate, merciful and forgiving. We can be confident that God honors the commitment of our lives, and will help us and grant our heart’s deepest requests.
