Scripture Readings

“But now my eyes have seen you.” —Job 42:5b

“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.” —Luke 10:23b

I find it interesting that today’s readings refer to seeing. Job sees and understands the movement of God in the world and that he doesn’t have as much control as he thought. The disciples see the mysteries of the kingdom of God because of their faith in Jesus.

The readings encourage me to see where God is in my life. How has God been present in the people I encountered? Where was God in the events of my day? God is there in simple moments such as greeting a co-worker and the warmth of the sun. God is also there during times of pain and suffering like when my family gathers to pray a novena for a loved one who recently passed away.

Both readings imply that humility is needed to see God. Job answers God saying, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered. I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know,” (Job 42:1-3). In the Gospel, Jesus said, “Although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned you have revealed them to the childlike,” (Luke 10: 21b). We cannot understand and control everything, and that is ok. It is in that uncertainty that gives us the ability to see God. Let us pray for the humility we need to see God’s presence in our lives.
