Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
Today’s readings have been a source of astonishment for many generations of Christians. In today's first reading from Ezekiel, the wise and prudent ruler of the great city of Tyre is proud. When he reflects on his many successes, he can only conclude that he has divine power. How else could he be so good at everything? But Ezekiel’s message to him is simple: ‘Prince, you are a mortal man, you and will die soon at the hands of murderers.’
When you receive a compliment, do you take credit yourself, or give it to those whose generosity put you where you are? Since our culture values individuality so highly, we so often erroneously believe that our place in life is due entirely to our wise choices, our intelligence, or our hard work. But the truth is, God’s generosity and the kindness and support of parents, family, and numerous teachers & friends have set us up with the values, education, societal status, and freedom that enables us to live as well as we do. The Spirit is at work in us and in many people around us. We can only be grateful to the Holy Spirit that our lives are as good as they are.
But the rich, Jesus warns, will truly struggle to enter the Kingdom of God. This is because, in the Kingdom, we don’t rely on our own money or power. We rely on God. When we are rich, whether in money, talent, or intelligence, it is terribly easy to think we can rely on something besides God. What are we tempted to rely on? Do our many friends make us feel safe? Does our steady job give us confidence? Do we believe our prudence and acumen keeps us a step ahead of everyone else? Does the size of our savings or retirement account give you consolation?
All these things can be swept away in an instant. But as disciples we have a sure, sturdy foundation in Jesus. We can rely on our God to be with us in all circumstances. Nothing will separate us from the Love of Christ. Whatever we give up for the sake of the gospel will be returned to us a hundred times more in the Kingdom! So let us not rely on anything but the Lord, and put everything we have and all that we are in the service of the Kingdom of God. Amen!
