Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist
Today’s memorial celebrates martyrdom/passion of John the Baptist. The date of this memorial likely corresponds with the date of the dedication of the church of St. John the Baptist in Samara. This church commemorates the location where tradition holds that St. John the Baptist was buried.
The gospel today tells the story of John the Baptist’s martyrdom. The story recalls how lust, jealousy and anger forced Herod into a position of having John killed to fulfill a promise. But the reason John the Baptist was killed was because of his challenging message. His message frightened people because it challenged them to repent. John remained faithful to his message in the face of suffering, torture and death.
Even in death, John’s life still challenges us. What is it that we believe? Are there any beliefs for which we would we give our lives? Do we really mean we would be willing to die for that belief? Neil Armstrong personally believed that they only had a 50% percent chance of landing on the moon. However, he believed 100% in the mission. He was willing to give his all for the sake of the mission.
Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians challenges members of their community to give their all, to be responsible stewards of their lives for the sake of their mission. Their mission was to imitate Christ, to be witnesses to the Lord even in their work. How is it that we witness in our work?
Almighty and ever-loving God, thank you for heroes who give their all for the sake of the mission. Challenge us, this and every day, to be faithful believers walk in your ways. In this way, Your handiwork will be noticed through all we say and do, and Your Mission will be fulfilled. Amen!
