Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we cry out, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens!” (Eph 1:3) How immeasurable this gift of our Holy Blessed Mother! For it is through you, most holy and exquisite Mother, that “all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God.”
How blessed are you, Queen of Creation! Through you, in absolute perfection, was the splendid plan of our salvation fulfilled. In deep faith and perfect humility, you—pure and gentle woman—simply said “yes” to what was asked of you. It was neither understanding nor pride that led you to accept God’s request—it was obedience born of love. In loving obedience you accepted both great joy and unthinkable sorrow as mother of our Savoir. What expression of your love could surpass your precious obedience?
Could you have conceived of the thought that your “yes” to God would alter the course of the universe? Did you suspect that, until the end of time, you would be our most powerful intercessor? Could you imagine so many children running to you, clinging to you, imploring you?
And this day we come to you again in gratitude for your unfailing protection and guidance. Shelter us on our way and bring us safely home.
Intercede for us…that our hearts may love as yours;
Intercede for us…that out of love we become ever more obedient;
Intercede for us…that our obedience may bring glory to our God;
Come near, Holy Mother; remain with us now and at the hour of our death.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
