Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Today's Mass Readings

The readings today speak to us about a threefold understanding of mission. The mission of course is proclaiming the Gospel message to the ends of the Earth. In today’s reading from the Gospel of John, Jesus proclaims that He is a light to the world so that no one need remain in darkness. Jesus’ mission was to testify to the “Father” and to bring salvation to the nations. “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me. (John 12:44). Jesus came into the world to save it and not condemn it.

Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles is better understood knowing the verses that immediately precede them. King Herod, a man who had been violently treating the followers of Jesus was struck dead. Now with Saul converted and Herod dead, the Holy Spirit was freer to build the heavenly Kingdom. The first line of the Act’s reading today sets the tone for the mission of the early Church. “The word of God continued to spread and grow.” (Acts 12:24) Indeed it was exactly what the Holy Spirit intended. Paul and Barnabas had hands laid upon them and then they were sent forth to proclaim the word of God.

In the Psalm response today we proclaim “O God, let all the nations praise you!” (Ps 67:4) In a way, this refrain is our marching orders. Our mission is to continue what Jesus started. We must testify to the light. During Lent, prayer and fasting helped us become people better in tune with the Lord.

During Easter we especially focus on our call to be one with Jesus and the Apostles. By virtue of our Baptism, each of us is called to be Christ's risen presence. Joining with the apostels and the early Christians can we resolve that today will not pass without each of day being Christ to someone? Today, let us think of one person or one way in which we can testify to the Light that is Jesus Christ.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Amen. Alleluia!
