Today's Mass Readings

At my house, we have a air conditioner (window unit). On top of the unit a bird has chosen to nest. This mother bird has laid two eggs which she has sat on ever since. Our daughter discovered this Morning Dove which she calls Birdie. Birdie and her have seemed to bond. What strikes us the most about our daughter’s new friendship is the joy it brings her. First thing, every morning she gets out of bed and runs to see the Birdie. Sometimes she sings to the bird and often she says the bird smiles at her. The joy we see in her face is powerful. It is a radiance that seems to reflect the purest of joys. When we recognize these signs of God’s presence, they are manna for our journey. It is in seeing God, even in basic things like in bread and wine that we realize Easter joy. Today we remember Catherine of Siena whose willingness to speak the truth of the Gospel brought her many critics. Catherine stayed passionate about her love for the Lord and the Church throughout her life. Her witness is reflected in the readings of the day.

Today's readings from the Acts of the Apostles describes how life in the Church was hard. One of the first martyrdoms had occurred and the flock was scattered throughout the land. Yet as one part of the Church buries Stephen, others still preach the Gospel. Philip passionately preaches to the believers in Samaria. “With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip, when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing.” (Acts 8:6) His ministry in Samaria saw the driving out of demons and a great many were healed of their illnesses.

In today’s world, the work of building the kingdom still continues. Be it the little bird, or the early Christian community of the Catherine of Sienna, God's presence continues to speak to us. Although God’s reign is not fully present, we find signs of Resurrection that hearken to us to be recognized. A question one might ask themselves daily is: Where do I see God today? The signs may seem subtle but upon further examination they can convey a deep sense of wonder and awe.

Lord help us this day to pay attention to your presence in our midst; so that our hearts can “sing praise to the glory of your name.” (Ps. 66:16) Amen. Alleluia.
